What 𘝪 means

It is glossed “to separate” in Tangut.

Written Tangut was established for official correspondence in 1036. In 1038, a state committee was formed to translate Buddhist sutras into Tangut. A 12th century imperial rhyme book, Homophones—a reference that records sounds by rhyme—became a major source for reconstructing Tangut forms and sounds.

Tangut writing survived in Buddhist manuscripts and printed books after the state fell in 1227. Scholarly sources transcribe this character’s reconstructed reading in different systems as jon₃ and dźjow¹; these are technical spellings, not different meanings. Tangut is a distinct script for a historical language, with characters shaped in a tradition influenced by Chinese writing.

How do I enter 𘝪?

Use a Tangut-aware input method.

A Tangut input method (IME) can find characters by shape or by a scholarly reading. It presents candidate characters to choose from; the key scheme depends on the tool.

Entering a character and displaying it are separate. Without a Tangut-capable font, 𘝪 may appear as an empty box or not appear at all. Fonts that support Tangut can draw it differently, but the underlying character is unchanged.

Questions people ask

2

Is 𘝪 Chinese?

No. Tangut is a distinct script for a historical language. A Chinese-influenced shape does not make 𘝪 a Chinese character.

Why does 𘝪 show as a box?

A font without Tangut coverage may show an empty box or nothing. The character itself is unchanged; a Tangut-capable font supplies its drawing.

Why is 𘝪 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
