tibetan digit half six

Tibetan Digit Half Six

48/211

༯ is a Tibetan numeral for five and a half (5½), written as a half-number at the end of a number. It is one character, not an ordinary six with punctuation. In casual chat, treat it as notation and ask for context.

Text symbol

What ༯ means

It represents five and a half as the ending digit of a Tibetan numeral. Tibetan half-numbers mark a value 0.5 below their named digit, so half-six is 5½. In a multi-digit number, it belongs in the final position.

What do historical examples show?

They show half-values in monetary and technical records. A coin from 1918–1925 records “seven and a half” in words; a Tibetan postage stamp from 1933 uses a related slashed half-digit for 7½ skar, a monetary denomination.

A 1995 combining-slash proposal considered adding a stroke to an ordinary digit; the adopted design gives each half-digit its own precomposed character. In 1999, a Unicode mailing-list discussion named astrology and market prices as traditional settings for half-digits.

What does it mean when someone sends it?

Read it as a number, not a tone. Alone, it gives too little context to calculate anything; ask what numeral or quantity it belongs to. A 2000 report describes crossed marks in art and astrology whose local reading may not follow Unicode’s half-step rule.

A technical numeral; in casual chat, ask what number or amount it belongs to.

If the intended value is six, the ordinary Tibetan digit is ༦.

Were Tibetan half-digits used in thangka measurements?

It is reported, but unverified as of 2026. One convention reads crossed numerals as half-dimensions in a thangka, a Tibetan religious painting, or in stupa design; check the local notation before calculating.

Why does it look like a crossed six?

The Unicode Tibetan chart gives a reference shape, not a required font design; fonts can draw the slash differently. The stroke still belongs to one precomposed numeral.
