What ⯺ means
It marks united or connected pawns.
Chess Informant, a Serbian chess magazine, used compact marks for language-neutral analysis. It became important in the 1960s, helping spread chess expertise across the Iron Curtain, the Cold War divide between east and west Europe. A 1993 multilingual chess encyclopedia lists this mark among widely used chess notation.
In the 2017 Unicode proposal, it was called “Union Symbol”; its chess reading was “united pawns.”
Chess-analysis shorthand; outside chess, its meaning needs context.
