Why was a rifle in a computer’s character set?
It was one ready-made tile for drawing a screen graphic.
A 2021 source table links it to display code 55 in the Sharp MZ’s European alternate display set, a second shelf of ready-made screen shapes. The MZ-700’s character ROM—a built-in store of shapes—held 512 fixed 8-by-8 patterns. Its alternate set could not be entered directly from the keyboard or the computer’s BASIC language; a program displayed a chosen tile by writing its code to video memory, the part that tells the screen which characters to show.
The picture’s original job was screen graphics: one stored character could draw the rifle without pixel-by-pixel artwork. The 2021 Unicode proposal aimed to preserve such old character data for exchange with legacy computers, emulators, and text-mode graphics. It keeps left-, up-, right-, and down-pointing rifles as separate characters, so direction stays part of the pictured pose.
A literal firearm picture with no built-in tone; sent alone, it can read as threatening.
If you mean a game object or prop, say so in words.

Questions people ask
1Why does the up-pointing rifle show as a box?
A box means the font or app lacks a drawing for this character. Use one with a glyph for it, and the same text will appear as a rifle.
