upwards finger-post arrow

Upwards Finger-Post Arrow

🠵 points upward and can direct attention to material higher on a page. It is a text character, but the font on your device draws its distinctive outline; a similar symbol-font arrow may not be the same stored character.

What 🠵 means

It points upward; nearby content supplies the destination.

In a list, heading, or diagram, it can mark an item higher in the layout. The arrow gives a direction, not the item's name.

Where did the finger-post arrow come from?

Its style traces through computer symbol fonts and a 2011 encoding proposal.

The computer-font trail begins with the Wingdings fonts, which first appeared with Windows 3.1 in 1992. The family later expanded to include Wingdings 2, Wingdings 3, and Webdings; Wingdings 3 focused on arrows.

A 2011 Unicode proposal considered these symbol-font repertoires for standard text encoding and included finger-post arrows from Wingdings 3. A symbol font assigns a drawing to an ordinary key; Unicode gives an encoded character its own identity in text.

Why does this arrow look different?

A font draws its shape, so the outline can vary or disappear.

As of 2026, browser display depends on available fonts and fallback choices. Unicode identifies 🠵 as a character; the selected font draws its glyph. Without a supporting font, it may appear as a blank box or nothing.

Wingdings 3 is a symbol font that assigns drawings to ordinary keys. A similar arrow entered that way may resemble 🠵, but the stored text is the key's character, not this Unicode arrow; another system may display it differently.

Functional and typographic; its finger-post outline makes an upward marker more distinctive than a plain arrow.

For controls that need a familiar up arrow, use ↑; 🠵 has a less standard outline.

Questions people ask

2

Can Wingdings 3 type this arrow?

No. Wingdings 3 assigns drawings to ordinary keys; a similar arrow can appear when that font is selected, but the text does not store 🠵 itself. Another system may display the key differently.

Why is this arrow blank in a document?

The selected font may not include 🠵, so it can show an empty box or nothing. Choose a font that supports the character; the text still identifies the same Unicode character.
