variation selector-25

Variation Selector-25

9/240

Use Variation Selector-25 only beside its intended base character in a documented sequence; it requests a registered glyph form, not an emoji or message. It is mainly used in specialist text to preserve exact Chinese-character shapes. Alone, or where the pair is unsupported, it normally leaves no visible trace.

Text symbol

What 󠄈 means

Put it immediately after a documented base character.

Unlike a historical sign, its story begins in Unicode design: Plane 14 variant-selector proposals developed through the late 1990s and early 2000s, and the supplementary range entered Unicode 4.0. That date belongs to the encoding, not to an older cultural tradition. The original purpose was practical: request a glyph choice in plain text without assigning every shape its own character.

For Han writing—the shared Chinese-character tradition—the pair is an ideographic variation sequence: a base character plus this selector. The Ideographic Variation Database (IVD) data dated 2025-07-14 lists VS25 in registered pairs across named collections such as Adobe-Japan1, KRName, MSARG, and Hanyo-Denshi. Those catalogues serve different communities, so “25” has no universal meaning; the base-plus-collection record chooses the glyphic target.

Why is Variation Selector-25 invisible?

It has no standalone glyph; it modifies the character before it.

A valid pair may change the base glyph. If the pair is unsupported—or is not a registered ideographic sequence—the base stays ordinary and the selector is invisible. Applications that do not support variation sequences should treat it as absent in search, sorting, and parsing.

Use it only with a documented sequence. Unicode does not let users assign their own meaning to an arbitrary pairing, and unregistered ideographic sequences are not for text interchange.

Technical and invisible: it belongs in encoded text, not as a standalone message.

Do not send the selector alone; recipients may see nothing.

Questions people ask

2

Why did my app ignore Variation Selector-25?

Because the pair is unsupported or unregistered. The base stays visible, while the selector is ignored.

Can I give Variation Selector-25 my own meaning?

No. Only standardized or registered sequences are portable; an arbitrary pairing should not be used for text interchange.
