Wancho Digit Four

53/59

𞋴 is the Wancho numeral for four, part of the script’s decimal digits. The script was devised to record Wancho sounds and tones more clearly; its 2019 Unicode encoding came later. If it appears as a box, the font in use may lack Wancho support.

What 𞋴 means

It stands for four in the Wancho digit system. The Wancho script is a left-to-right writing system for the Wancho language, and this character is used when writing numbers in it.

The script was devised by Banwang Losu, a teacher in Arunachal Pradesh, between 2001 and 2012. In a 2023 interview, he said his research took 12 years and began after Roman letters failed to capture Wancho sounds and tones. Its Unicode encoding in 2019 came after the script’s development.

How was the Wancho script developed?

It was shaped around Wancho sounds, tones and community symbols. A 2023 account describes signs drawn from community life and tone marks that represent distinctions across Upper, Middle and Lower Wancho varieties. A 2024 report says Losu first explored Roman and Devanagari forms before developing a system suited to the language.

Teaching in selected schools began in 2016. A 2024 report describes primers, teacher training and exams, as well as folktales and folksongs being documented through the language-preservation effort.

Why does 𞋴 look different or show as a box?

The character is fixed; fonts control its drawing. A font without Wancho coverage may show a missing-glyph box or replacement mark. That changes its display, not the character in the text.

The representative shapes in the primer and Unicode chart were updated in 2020. Your font may use different strokes from that sample while still displaying the same digit.

A script-specific number, suited to Wancho writing and instruction.

1

Why does 𞋴 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
