Where did the facepalm pose come from?

The pose is centuries older than the joke. The Old English Illustrated Hexateuch, an illustrated Bible manuscript from c.1025–1050, shows Adam lowering his face into his hand in shame as he leaves Eden. In some Jewish practice, worshippers cover their eyes during the opening words of the Shema prayer to focus on it.

Henri Vidal’s 1896 sculpture of Cain holds his head in remorse. Online, the pose’s best-known image is Captain Picard’s facepalm in the 1990 Star Trek episode “Deja Q”, reused endlessly as a reaction picture; “facepalmed” appears in a 1996 post on Usenet, an early online forum.
