👩‍🎤

woman singer · gender Woman

is a singer: a person holding a microphone, drawn with spiky hair and glam-rock stage makeup. People send it for karaoke nights, concerts, their favourite artist or anyone who just sang. The punk look is only styling; it covers every kind of singer, and in most phones the face paint is a wink at David Bowie.

What 🧑‍🎤 means

It means a singer or singing, in any style, from shower to stadium. The emoji is built from a person and a microphone, and most designs dress the person as a glam-rock or punk performer: spiked or dyed hair, a leather jacket and a lightning bolt painted across one eye. Despite the costume, it is not limited to rock. People use it for pop stars, opera, choir practice, a karaoke booth or a toddler belting out a nursery rhyme.

The three everyday jobs are these. First, singing as an activity: “karaoke tonight? 🧑‍🎤” or “rehearsal ran late 🧑‍🎤”. Second, a person who sings: fans put it beside an artist's name, and musicians put it in their profile bios to say what they do. Third, the rock-star feeling: posting a selfie with 🧑‍🎤 means “I'm the main act tonight”, whether or not any singing happens.

What does it mean when someone sends 🧑‍🎤?

Usually a compliment, an invitation or fan excitement. Sent as a reply to a clip of you singing, it means “you were great” or “you're a rock star”, often with a teasing edge if the performance was more enthusiastic than tuneful. In a group chat it tends to announce or accept a night of karaoke or a gig. From a fan it marks the singer they are talking about, and with a heart it says “this is my favourite”.

Tone matters little here: the emoji is almost never negative. The only way it bites is sarcasm aimed at someone who hogged the microphone, and the words around it make that obvious.

Which version should I pick?

🧑‍🎤 is the gender-neutral form; and show a man and a woman. All three come in six skin tones, eighteen forms in all, and the picker on most phones lets you choose. The neutral form fits when you mean singing in general, a group, or a person whose gender you don't want to foreground; it is also fine for a specific person. The man and woman forms came first and are still the ones many people reach for when they mean a particular artist or themselves.

Celebratory and a little theatrical. Fine with friends, fans and family; too playful for a formal note to a professional musician you don't know.

Sent alone after a friend's performance it can read as teasing about their singing; add a word of praise if you mean it kindly.

Worth knowing

  • The man and woman singers were encoded in 2016 alongside other profession emoji; the gender-neutral 🧑‍🎤 arrived three years later, once every profession got a neutral form.
  • David Bowie's 1973 album Aladdin Sane shows him with a red-and-blue lightning bolt across his face. Several phones paint the same bolt on the singer emoji, released months after Bowie's death in 2016.

Questions people ask

4

Is the singer emoji meant to be David Bowie?

Not officially. The emoji means any singer, but the lightning-bolt face paint in several designs is widely seen as a nod to Bowie's Aladdin Sane cover, and the first singer emoji appeared in 2016, the year he died. Fans use it for him accordingly.

Why do I see a person and a microphone side by side instead of one emoji?

Your app or device doesn't support this combined emoji. 🧑‍🎤 is and glued together by an invisible joiner; when the glued picture is missing, the parts show separately. Updating the system or app usually fixes it.

Can I use it for a pop or classical singer, not rock?

Yes. The punk styling is just the artwork. People use 🧑‍🎤 for pop idols, K-pop groups, opera, choirs, rappers and karaoke alike; the microphone is the point, not the hairstyle.

What's the difference between 🧑‍🎤 and ?

is only the microphone and also covers speeches, hosting and “mic drop” moments. 🧑‍🎤 puts a person behind it, so it unambiguously means a singer or singing, and lets you pick gender and skin tone.
