yi syllable cuo

Yi syllable cuo

700/1165

ꊻ writes one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi (Nuosu), and cuo is its syllable label in the standard romanization. In a Yi word, the surrounding syllables give the full meaning. Sent alone outside that context, it identifies one syllable but does not explain a whole message.

Text symbol

What ꊻ means

It writes one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi.

The standard romanization labels that syllable cuo; this is not an English gloss. In this system, the absence of final t, p, or x marks a level mid tone: the voice stays around a middle pitch. Those endings mark other tones, as ꊺ and ꊼ show.

How did the Liangshan Yi script develop?

It grew from varied Yi writing traditions into a shared standard.

Some inscriptions attributed to Yi writing are placed as early as the Western Han period; surviving paper and parchment texts date to around 1500. These are different kinds of evidence, so the manuscripts do not by themselves date the script’s beginning. Yi writing traditions across parts of Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan used different graphs, sounds, tones, and layouts.

The modern Liangshan standard addressed a practical problem: traditional local forms varied and did not represent modern pronunciation consistently. It was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy, using syllables suited to the Liangshan dialect.

Cuan script is a historical name Han Chinese administrators used for part of the Yi writing tradition. It names a connected tradition, not a translation of this individual syllable; the Liangshan standard does not represent every Yi dialect.

What can I tell if ꊻ is sent alone?

Only that it is one syllable from the Liangshan Yi script.

Without surrounding Yi text, ꊻ does not reveal the complete word or intended message. Ask for the full Yi word or sentence, or a translation, if you need its meaning.

Inside Liangshan Yi writing, ꊻ is an ordinary syllable; alone, it gives too little context for a full translation.

A lone ꊻ does not tell you the whole Yi word or message.

Why does ꊻ look different across fonts?

Stroke details can vary because Yi syllables are text glyphs drawn by fonts. A font without Yi coverage may show a replacement box or fallback character.
