What ꂛ means
It writes one Yi syllable; “hmap” is its label.
“Hmap” is a label written in Latin letters, not an English translation. Read ꂛ with the surrounding Yi text to see how the syllable functions in its word.
Yi writing predates digital encoding. The earliest securely dated surviving example is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485. The bell marks the earliest dated example, not the script’s start. Traditional Yi writing varied by region and was preserved largely in manuscripts used by bimo, Yi ritual specialists, for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical work. The modern Liangshan standard developed from these regional traditions: devised in 1974, tested from 1975, and officially promulgated in 1980 to support wider literacy through schools, textbooks, newspapers, and public writing. Its relationship to Chinese characters is debated; resemblance alone does not prove borrowing.
What does it mean if someone sends ꂛ alone?
One isolated syllable does not reveal the sender’s intent.
In a Yi-language message, read it as one syllable within its surrounding words. If someone sends it outside that context, ask what they meant instead of guessing at a mood or private code.
Why does ꂛ show as a box?
A box points to font or app support.
ꂛ is text drawn by a font. Different fonts can give it different shapes, and an app that skips normal font fallback may show a blank or box even when a suitable font is installed.
It reads as a Yi syllable; without Yi context, a recipient may not know its role.
Don’t infer the sender’s mood from one isolated syllable.

1Why does ꂛ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
