What ꌋ means
It writes one Yi syllable, not a standalone idea. In the standardized Liangshan spelling, si is an s sound followed by the vowel in see, spoken at a level middle pitch. By itself, ꌋ has no dependable English translation; the surrounding Yi word or sentence supplies the meaning.
The oldest securely dated surviving Yi-script evidence usually cited is a bronze bell inscription from Guizhou, dated 1485. Stories of earlier origins and some purported older artifacts remain debated. Traditional Yi writing varied by region; bimo, Yi ritual specialists, kept manuscripts for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts.
The standardized Liangshan form was developed in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, based on older Northern Yi material. This phonetic syllabary was made for use in textbooks, newspapers, official documents, and literature. It covers Liangshan (Nuosu) Yi, not every regional Yi tradition, which can differ in glyphs and sound values. Traditional Yi characters that represented words or ideas have their own lineage; they are not derived from Han Chinese characters.
