What ꌊ means
One tradition credits Aki with Yi’s script in the Tang dynasty (618–907); a 1485 bronze-bell inscription is the earliest surviving example. The older Yi script, historically called Cuan or Wei, is distinct from Han Chinese writing. Local priests called bimo passed regional forms down for religious, magical, medical, genealogical, and historical texts. Liangshan Latin spelling began in 1956 to aid literacy; the traditional form was standardized in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 for Nuosu, not all Yi dialects.

1Why does ꌊ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
