What ۟ means
Leave the marked letter unspoken. It marks an extra Arabic letter—alif, wāw, or yā—kept in Qur’anic spelling but omitted in recitation, whether reading continues or stops.
Qur’an copies from the 600s show scattered letter dots; recitation marks developed in layers. A 2024 comparison found different placements: Indonesian editions use the mark with alif, while Madinah editions also use it with wāw and yā.
