Block Octant 1234678

469/686

𜷚 is a seven-cell tile in an eight-part grid for making blocky text graphics. Early Kaypro computers used octants like this as chunky pixels: neighboring character tiles could build a low-resolution picture.

What 𜷚 means

The name lists the seven cells that are filled.

An octant divides a character position into two columns and four rows; this one fills cells 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8, leaving 5 blank. A Kaypro 10 guide from 1983 documents graphics characters as eight-pixel cells for drawing on its text screen. In 2024, Microsoft added all 256 octants to Cascadia Code, so the old tile set can also be used for modern terminal art with that font.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜷚 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
