What means
Cells 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 are filled. The other two stay open.
Joined together, octants make terminal pixel art: pictures assembled from text cells.
Why did Kaypro use octants?
They let text cells stand in for graphics pixels. Kaypro home computers used 24 semigraphics to sketch images one character cell at a time. A 1983 Kaypro 10 guide documents graphics characters and pixel drawing; its reverse-video set, where light and dark switch places, includes this pattern.
As of 2026, Ratatui, a terminal UI library, documents octants as chart markers.

Questions people ask
1Can my terminal fail to show this glyph?
Yes. A font or terminal without an octant glyph may show a replacement character. Ratatui’s documentation says octants are less widely supported than Braille as of 2026.
