Text symbol

What 𜷘 means

It marks the filled parts of one text cell.

An octant has two columns and four rows. In 𜷘, positions 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 are filled; 2 and 5 are open. Neighboring cells form the image.

Octants on Kaypro computers trace to graphics-capable models from 1984; each 2-by-4 tile plotted part of a drawing and could be saved in a text file. Teletext and France’s Minitel used related six-cell mosaics. Gnuplot’s 6.0 manual also documents an octants mode for terminal plots.

A technical tile for low-resolution text and terminal art.

In terminals, this may appear as a missing-glyph box: as of 2026, support varies across apps and fonts.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜷘 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
