Block Octant-1567

349/686

𜵢 is a Kaypro semigraphics tile: it fills cells 1, 5, 6, and 7 in a two-column, four-row grid. Kaypro programs used such octants as pixel blocks to draw pictures and borders on a text screen.

What 𜵢 means

A Kaypro tile with four filled cells in a two-column, four-row grid.

The ending digits list its filled cells. On Kaypro CP/M computers, such semigraphics acted as on/off pixels: programs placed character tiles across the text screen to draw small pictures and borders.

The 1983 Kaypro 10 guide describes the two-by-four drawing method. A 2021 Unicode proposal maps the old Kaypro patterns for emulators and file conversion; it calls eight-cell tiles “octants” by analogy with four-cell quadrants and six-cell sextants. To convert an old Kaypro text file, decode its stored byte with the Kaypro character mapping; that byte is not itself this Unicode character.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜵢 show as a box?

If the app's font lacks the character, it may show a missing-glyph box or leave a blank. That is a font-coverage issue, not a different octant pattern. Choose a font that includes the glyph to see the tile.
