block octant-1568

Block Octant-1568

408/686

Block Octant-1568 is a Kaypro semigraphics tile: four lit cells in a 24 patch. Kaypro programs placed such tiles beside one another like pixels, turning a text screen into a simple picture. The numbers identify which cells are lit.

Text symbol

What 𜶝 means

It lights four of eight cells in a text-screen tile. A Kaypro program combined block octants into pixels by placing the matching 24 tile at each screen position; neighboring cells formed pictures, borders, or game screens. “Octant” refers to the eight small blocks, arranged in two columns and four rows.

By 1983, a Kaypro 10 guide described drawing by setting pixels in these graphics cells. Unicode added this pattern in 2024 to preserve it as portable text for Kaypro conversion and emulation.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜶝 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
