Block Octant-258

381/686

𜶂 is a tile in text-mode semigraphics, with parts 2, 5, and 8 filled in a 24 character cell. By the early 1980s, Kaypro computers used this grid for pixel-like pictures; Unicode octants carry the technique into terminal graphics.

What 𜶂 means

It marks three of the tile’s eight small cells. The digits 2, 5, and 8 name those positions in a two-column, four-row grid.

Adjacent tiles make larger pictures one character cell at a time. Unicode’s proposal also aimed to let text data move between legacy computers, emulators, and Unicode-based terminal software.

Repeating the tile makes a small, regular mosaic texture.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜶂 show as a box?

Missing-glyph fallback. A font or terminal without a drawing for this character may show a box or replacement symbol; the placeholder is not the intended mosaic.
