Block Octant-158

380/686

𜶁 is a 24 tile from Kaypro semigraphics, where early computers built simple pictures out of text cells. A Kaypro 10 guide copyrighted in 1983 explains how these cells made rough screen images. It fills three of eight positions, so it is a patch of a larger image rather than a self-contained pictogram.

What 𜶁 means

Cells 1, 5, and 8 are on in the eight-cell grid. In a 24 layout, they sit at the top-left, third-row left, and bottom-right. The word octant follows the same mosaic idea as a quadrant (four parts) or sextant (six), dividing one character cell into eight smaller squares.

Kaypro computers ran CP/M, an operating system for early microcomputers. A Kaypro 10 guide copyrighted in 1983 explains its graphics bytes: the high bit marked a byte as graphics, leaving seven bits to control eight positions; inverse video (swapping light and dark) could switch the eighth. Unicode’s legacy mapping pairs this exact pattern with Kaypro’s normal-set byte E2.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜶁 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
