Block Octant-358

383/686

This is a tiny graphics tile: cells 3, 5, and 8 of its two-column, four-row grid are lit. By 1984, Kaypro computers running CP/M used such tiles in character spaces to draw larger screen pictures; CP/M was the operating system.

What 𜶄 means

The digits label the lit cells, not a quantity. In the 1984 Kaypro graphics set, this pattern corresponded to normal-mode byte E8, the stored number for that character. Unicode keeps the mapping so older Kaypro character data can be exchanged intact.

A technical screen-drawing character: one small tile in Kaypro’s text graphics.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜶄 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
