What ० means
० is the Devanagari digit for zero.
Devanagari numerals use place value: in २०, ० leaves the units place empty; in १००, it leaves the tens and units places empty.
The numeral family is older than this shape. Brahmi, an early Indian writing system, had numeral signs by the 3rd century BCE but no zero symbol. The Bakhshali mathematical manuscript preserves a dot used as a placeholder; its original is conventionally dated to the 5th–7th centuries CE, though the dating is disputed. By the 7th century CE, the Indian mathematician Brahmagupta had described arithmetic rules for zero. Gupta numerals developed into Nagari, which gave rise to Devanagari digits. The decimal place-value system later travelled through Arabic writing into Europe, where the glyphs changed.
How do I type ०?
Use a Devanagari input layout.
As of 2026, the Windows Devanagari–INSCRIPT layout maps the top-row 0 key to ०. Other input layouts assign their own keys, so check which layout is active.
A field that requires ASCII 0 may reject ० even though both represent zero. Devanagari fonts can draw the oval differently without changing the character.
Neutral as a number; Devanagari digits make the script choice visible while the value stays the same.
For code, IDs, or strict forms, use the digit set they require.
