down-pointing racing car

Down-pointing racing car

𜲚 is a tiny racing-car picture facing downward, inherited from a Sharp MZ-700 screen font. Its original use was practical: programs could place ready-made pictures in a screen built from text characters.

What 𜲚 means

It is a small car picture facing the bottom edge.

The Sharp MZ-700, a home computer released in 1982, included the car in the European version’s second display set, at character slot F6. Its text screen assembled pictures from fixed 8×8-pixel character cells, so a program could place a ready-made car tile instead of drawing each pixel. The MZ-700 character ROM held 512 such cells.

Why does this down-pointing racing car look different?

Fonts can redraw its details without changing which way it points.

Unicode’s reference chart shows a sample, not a required design, so fonts can smooth or reshape the tiny car. Its downward direction is the identifying cue.

Why does 𜲚 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
