up-pointing racing car

Up-Pointing Racing Car

153/686

To enter 𜲘, type its Unicode number 1CC98 in a hexadecimal input method (one that accepts characters by number); it is an upward-facing racing-car sprite. It comes from an extra built-in set of character pictures on Sharp MZ computers; the MZ-700 went on sale in 1982. A 2021 Unicode proposal groups it with left-, right- and down-facing cars from the same game-sprite set.

What 𜲘 means

As of 2026, in Word for Windows, type 1CC98 and press Alt+X. GNOME text fields also accept Ctrl+Shift+U, then 1cc98 and Enter. Some French- or German-language Word editions use Alt+C instead.

Where did the MZ racing sprite come from?

It was ready-made game art in a Sharp MZ character set. On the MZ-700’s character display, each screen cell could show a preset shape, letting games build pictures without drawing every pixel. Its old code F5 gives its position in the European alternate set; it is a hexadecimal character slot, not the F5 key.

Can I type this with macOS Unicode Hex Input?

No. As of 2026, Apple’s built-in Unicode Hex Input accepts at most four hexadecimal digits, while this character needs five. Use another Unicode input method or a character chooser.

Why does this car show as a box?

The selected font or app may not have a drawing for this character. The text remains the same character; a font with coverage can show its shape.
