Kawi Punctuation Dot

70/87

𑽉 is a Kawi punctuation dot that divides smaller units of writing. In Old Javanese punctuation, one edition uses a comma as a provisional gloss for this lower-level break; it is not a universal comma or period. Without Kawi font support, it may display as a box.

What 𑽉 means

Read it as a lower-level break in Kawi text.

A DHARMA edition of an Old Javanese inscription describes the median dot as the lowest-level punctuation mark and provisionally represents it with a comma. That is an editorial aid, not a one-to-one equivalence between 𑽉 and commas in other scripts.

The Unicode proposal identifies the Plumpungan stele, an inscribed stone near Salatiga, as the earliest known record of early Kawi, dated c. 750 CE. Kawi developed gradually from Pallava, an earlier South Asian script, and appears in inscriptions and manuscripts across Java, Bali, Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, and the Philippines. Kawi is historically connected with later Javanese, Balinese, and Sundanese writing traditions. Kawi section and spiral marks also have a documented functional parallel with signs in Siddham, another script tradition.

Why does Kawi punctuation use several marks?

Different marks can show larger breaks or a closing pattern.

The 2020 Kawi encoding proposal documents arrangements of dots, section marks, flowers, circles, and spirals, but says their order is not standardized. One documented closing arrangement places 𑽉 with a spiral, a flower, and a closing spiral.

Because the sequences have no fixed standard, editions may use different English labels. Keep 𑽉 for Kawi-specific text or transcription; an ordinary full stop is not an interchangeable substitute.

A specialist mark for Kawi writing and historical transcription.

Don't swap it in for an ordinary comma or period; its role is specific to Kawi text.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𑽉 show as a box?

The selected font or its fallback lacks a Kawi glyph. A font with Kawi coverage can render it; the text still contains this character.
