Text symbol

What 𘭡 means

It can mark a word or a name’s sound.

A 2009 study by Wu Yingzhe links it to a Khitan word for “night” and to personal names, where it marks sound rather than meaning. He proposed /as/ or /ɛs/, with the exact vowel unresolved.

When does the script first appear?

Its creation date and oldest surviving text differ.

The Liao chronicle credits Emperor Taizu’s brother Yelü Diela with creating it in 924 or 925, after Khitan Large Script appeared in 920. This 10th-century system was made to write Khitan and drew on Uyghur writing. A 2026 reassessment dates the earliest securely dated surviving text to a 1051 tomb inscription. Jin rulers retained Khitan scripts until 1191; 12th-century Jurchen scripts drew on both.

Why does 𘭡 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
