Khitan Small Script Character 18B5F

96/471

𘭟 is a Khitan Small Script sign, not an emoji; indexes from 2009 and 2010 leave its individual reading unsettled. The Khitan ruled the Liao dynasty in northern China and used this separate script to write their language. Jurchen writing later adapted it.

What 𘭟 means

The reference indexes assign this sign no settled reading.

Kane’s 2009 index leaves it blank; a 2010 Unicode proposal labels the value “Unknown-29.” The script mixes signs for sounds and whole words, so its shape alone cannot decode this one.

Traditional histories date its creation to 924 or 925, when it was made to write Khitan. Its shapes drew on Chinese characters, while its sound system is linked to the Uyghur script, used farther west. A 2026 study challenges the early date, arguing the script was systematized later and citing a 1051 tomb inscription as the oldest securely dated example. It remained in use under the Jin dynasty until a ban in 1191. Inscriptions identified in 1922 revived study; Jurchen writers later adapted Khitan models.

Why does 𘭟 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
