What 𘯀 means
Its reconstructed value is iaŋ.
A second transcription writes iang; ŋ is the final sound in English “sing.” These are sound spellings, not translations.
Khitan sound signs form word clusters. The Khitan filler U16FE4 marks a less common layout; clusters may run horizontally or vertically.
When was Khitan small script first recorded?
Its oldest secure example is a 1051 tomb inscription.
Tradition credits Yelü Diela, the Liao emperor’s brother, and dates creation to 924 or 925; a 2026 study argues wider use came later.
Made to record Khitan, it borrowed shapes from Chinese characters and a sound model from Uyghur writing. It appeared on tomb and honor monuments, in letters, exams and poems. Jin abolished it in 1191; Jurchen writing modeled both Khitan scripts.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘯀 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
