khitan small script character-18bda

Khitan small-script character 18BDA

219/471

𘯚 is a Khitan small-script character; its Unicode number is an index, not a translation or pronunciation. The script, created around 925 to write Khitan for Liao (the Khitan-led state), is attributed to Yelü Diela and said to draw on the Uyghur writing system; its earliest known inscription dates to 1053. After Liao fell, the Jurchen, another people of the region, kept using Khitan writing.

What 𘯚 means

Sound signs cluster to spell words.

Khitan small script was one of two distinct writing systems for Khitan; the other was Khitan Large Script. It mixed logograms (whole-word signs) with phonograms (sound signs). Phonograms usually cluster in groups of two to eight to represent a word; logograms generally stand alone. Inside each cluster, the characters read from left to right and then top to bottom.

Why does 𘯚 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
