Khitan Small Script Character 18C76

375/471

𘱶 is a Khitan small-script character; “Character-18C76” is its catalog label, not a reading. The script used whole-word signs and sound signs grouped into blocks, so one isolated glyph may not reveal its role. Jurchen writing later borrowed from Khitan models.

What 𘱶 means

Not from the catalog label alone.

Unicode’s name marks its inventory position, not a pronunciation.

Some signs stood for whole words; sound signs usually combined into word-sized blocks.

When did the Khitan small script first appear?

Tradition predates the surviving evidence.

Tradition credits Yelü Diela with creating it around 925. The earliest securely dated surviving epitaph is from 1051; a 2026 study argues wider adoption came later.

What was the script for?

It wrote the Khitan language.

Khitan rulers founded Liao in northern China and used both scripts to write their language. Under the later, Jurchen-led Jin, Khitan writing continued until a 1191 ban; Jurchen scripts followed Khitan models.

Why does 𘱶 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
