Text symbol

What 𘱻 means

Its code-based name is an identifier, not a Khitan reading. Some signs stood for words; others represented sounds. Sound signs usually combined in groups of two to eight, so this glyph may be only part of a word.

How was Khitan Small Script created?

It was created to write the Khitan language. Tradition credits Yelü Diela and dates the script to around 925. Chinese characters shaped its forms; its sound system reportedly drew on Uyghur writing, although the scripts look different. Dated inscriptions reach back to 983. It was used beside the separate Khitan Large Script under Liao rule.

Why can Khitan text look different?

Liao-era text ran vertically, with columns ordered right to left. Transcriptions can arrange clusters horizontally or show characters one by one; that changes the page layout, not the character.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘱻 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
