large type piece left arm

Large Type Piece Left Arm

𜸞 belongs to Hewlett-Packard’s (HP) large-character set for terminal headings. It fills the left-side position in an enlarged letter’s grid, so the full shape comes from the surrounding cells.

Text symbol

What 𜸞 means

It supplies the left stroke of an enlarged letter.

The HP 2640 was a terminal: a screen and keyboard connected to a host computer. Its optional large-character set was made for display headings.

An HP character-set guide documents the construction in 1975: each large letter used nine characters in a 33 grid. This piece fills the left-arm position; its neighbors complete the letter.

Technical and archival; it belongs to a terminal display font.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜸞 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
