Large Type Piece Upper Left Crotch

536/686

𜸝 is a stroke fragment from Hewlett-Packard’s large-letter set for terminals. It was a junction piece, used to compose display-size letters rather than spell anything by itself.

Text symbol

What 𜸝 means

It forms the fork near a large letter’s upper-left edge.

The HP 2640 Large Character Set built each alphabetic character from nine cells in a 33 grid. This cell supplies the three-way join.

The HP 2640 line arrived in the mid-1970s with optional memory chips for alternate character sets. Its large pieces let programs show headlines in the same text grid; Unicode preserves each as an individual text character.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜸝 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
