large type piece right arm

Large Type Piece Right Arm

The Large Type Piece Right Arm is one reusable piece in HP’s oversized headline lettering. It makes sense as part of a grid of graphic strokes; alone, it is only a fragment of a larger shape.

What 𜸥 means

It supplies the right-hand stroke in a larger letter.

HP introduced the 2640A in 1974. On HP 2620 and 2640 terminals, a separate large-character set built headline letters from smaller pieces arranged in a grid. This piece supplied a right-hand stroke, while neighboring pieces completed each letter. Later HP 2645 models stored the set in the same read-only memory chip as regular Latin letters, math, and line-drawing symbols. A Unicode proposal submitted in 2021 documented the historical set with an HP Journal illustration and a terminal-manual excerpt.

Why does 𜸥 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
