lower right quadrant chess king

Lower Right Quadrant Chess King

This is the lower-right quarter of a chess-king picture from the Sharp MZ character set. It belongs in a 2×2 arrangement with three other quarter tiles; alone, it is only a corner, not a complete chess piece.

What 𜲽 means

It is one corner of a larger king picture.

The Sharp MZ-700's European alternate set had this graphic by the early 1980s. Its text screen used ready-made character cells for game graphics; four king quarters fit together as a 2×2 picture too large for one cell.

Could you type this Sharp MZ character directly?

No; the European alternate set was not keyboard-typeable.

On the MZ-700, BASIC—the built-in programming language—couldn't enter characters from that table. A program displayed them by enabling the alternate set and writing a display code into video memory, the screen's character grid.

Why does 𜲽 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
