Upper-right chess king tile

188/686

The Sharp MZ chess king symbol is only one corner of the whole image. In its original four-cell arrangement, the tile helped a text screen display a larger pixel drawing.

What 𜲻 means

No. It is one tile within a bigger picture. On Sharp MZ computers, four fixed character cells joined as a 22 graphic, with this symbol in the upper-right cell. The MZ series began with the MZ-80K in 1978.

A 2021 Unicode proposal notes that microcomputer makers often showed glyph charts without names; this modern label describes the tile’s position. Unicode retained the old figures as individual text characters for compatibility.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𜲻 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
