๐Ÿ

mouse

๐Ÿ is the mouse, the small grey animal, drawn whole from whiskers to tail. It is not the thing you click with. People send it for a pet mouse, something scurrying in the kitchen, a cartoon mouse, or anyone small and quiet. There are three mouse-like emoji: is just the face, is the bigger rat.

What ๐Ÿ means

A real mouse, and by extension anything small, quiet or sneaky. Many phones draw it from the side: round body, big ears, pink nose and a long thin tail. That full body is the point. You reach for ๐Ÿ when the animal itself is the subject: the pet mouse in a cage, the one your cat brought in, the lab mouse in a science post, the squeak you heard under the sink at 2 a.m.

Around that literal core sit the old sayings. โ€œQuiet as a mouseโ€ and โ€œcat and mouseโ€ can turn up as ๐Ÿ beside a or a . A mouse next to is the cartoon joke about appetite, or about tempting someone into a trap. Because a mouse is tiny and timid, the emoji can also soften a confession: โ€œI'm hiding at home all weekend ๐Ÿโ€.

It has a festive side too. The Rat opens the twelve-animal Chinese zodiac, and the everyday word in Chinese (้ผ ) and Japanese (nezumi) covers mice and rats alike, so you may see ๐Ÿ as well as in Lunar New Year greetings in a Rat year. 2020 was one; the next is 2032.

๐Ÿ, or : which one should I use?

for a cute face, ๐Ÿ for the animal, for a rat. The face came from the emoji sets of early Japanese phones; the full-body mouse and rat joined later, alongside other whole animals such as and . In everyday chat the face tends to be the quick, friendly one; the full body ๐Ÿ suits an actual creature, a joke that needs the tail, or talk about animals rather than feelings.

The rat is the one to be careful with. In English โ€œratโ€ also means a snitch or a traitor, and can be sent that way. ๐Ÿ carries none of that; a mouse is harmless, nervous, maybe a little pathetic, never a backstabber. For the zodiac animal, ๐Ÿ sidesteps that overtone.

Gentle and literal; playful when smallness or timidity is the joke. At worst it says timid; it doesn't sting the way can.

Don't send it for the computer mouse: that is , and readers will picture an animal.

Worth knowing

  • In the zodiac folk tale the Rat came first by riding on the Ox's back across the river and leaping off at the finish line, which is why it heads the twelve-animal cycle.
  • Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu god of beginnings, is traditionally shown riding a mouse, sometimes a rat, named Mushika.

Questions people ask

1

Is ๐Ÿ rude or an insult?

Mostly no. At worst a mouse means timid, as in โ€œare you a man or a mouse?โ€ The snitch meaning belongs to the rat in English slang; the mouse doesn't carry that.
