Outlined Digit Eight

249/686

𜳸 is the number eight in an outlined display style; the outline changes its look, not its value. The retro computer lettering came from Sharp MZ systems, where outlined digits appeared in logos and screen artwork. Unicode compatibility normalization can turn it into a plain 8.

What 𜳸 means

It comes from the European display set for Sharp MZ computers.

The MZ-80K began Sharp’s computer line in 1978. In the 1980s, a European Sharp MZ character set included outlined 0–9 and A–Z beside the plain forms; the outlined set appeared in logos and screen artwork.

Why does 𜳸 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
