Sinhala Archaic Number Eighty

17/20

𑇱 means eighty in Sinhala Illakkam, a historical Sinhala numeral system. It represents the whole value eighty; the system had separate signs for tens and larger values and no zero placeholder. It appears in historical records, while modern Sinhala number writing uses Hindu-Arabic numerals.

Text symbol

What 𑇱 means

Eighty, in Sinhala Illakkam.

This is a whole-number sign, not the digit eight repeated. Sinhala Illakkam gives tens their own signs and has no zero placeholder, so 𑇱 carries the value eighty by itself.

Where did Sinhala archaic numerals come from?

The broader system has roots in older Brahmi-like numerals.

Early Sinhala number signs resembling Brahmi appear on stone slabs from Dakkina Vihara, although many inscriptions wrote dates in words. This evidence concerns the older numeral family as a whole.

In 1815, the system appears in the Kandyan Convention and in royal documents and artifacts. Sinhala Illakkam served for everyday calculations and simple numbers. Other Sinhala systems had different jobs: Lith Illakkam for astrology, Swara for numbering palm-leaf manuscript pages, and Katapayadiya for dates and astrological writing.

What does 𑇱 mean when someone sends it?

It still reads as eighty; the glyph alone says nothing about tone.

If someone sends it alone, read it as the number eighty. If the surrounding message does not clarify why, ask them for context.

The notation combines separate digit and magnitude signs. In the documented 388 example, 𑇱 contributes eighty between the hundreds sign and the final eight.

Historical and specialist; its use points to archival, typographic, or numeral-system context.

A missing box means the font lacks this glyph; it still means eighty.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𑇱 appear as a box?

The selected font lacks a glyph for it. A font with Sinhala archaic numeral coverage can display it; its value remains eighty.

Can I use 𑇱 for modern Sinhala 80?

Not for ordinary modern Sinhala number writing. It belongs to the historical Sinhala Illakkam system and suits transcription or discussion of that system.
