It was one tile in a second display character set. The European alternate display table on the Sharp MZ held ready-made graphics for programs to arrange into screen pictures. Unicode's 2021 compatibility proposal preserved this glyph as a separate character, so old text can retain the original mark.
On the Sharp MZ-700, alternate-table characters were not direct keyboard input. A program could show one with POKE, a command in BASIC (the computer's programming language) that writes its character code into screen memory.

1Why does show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 16.0 (2024), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
