Tangut Component 674

674/768

𘪡 is a component used to describe and index complete Tangut characters, not a word with its own translation. You’ll encounter it in character research and in an Ideographic Description Sequence, which lays out the pieces of a full character.

What 𘪡 means

No: it is a structural component, not a complete Tangut word.

Unicode uses Tangut components like this one to index and analyze full Tangut characters. An Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) can arrange components to show how a complete character is built.

In historical Tangut dictionaries, a component’s associated source character could suggest a meaning or sound, but the component itself did not keep one fixed meaning or pronunciation. Treat 𘪡 as structural notation, not something to translate alone.

Why is 𘪡 called a Tangut component?

It belongs to the parts used to describe full Tangut characters.

The Tangut script was commissioned by Western Xia emperor Li Yuanhao in 1036, amid state-building. It may have supported a Tangut Buddhist canon and a distinct state identity; the script also carried official records and translations of Buddhist, Confucian, encyclopedic, military, and literary works.

Chinese writing provided important models for Tangut’s visual and compositional principles. Khitan writing is sometimes discussed as another influence, but a direct derivation is unsettled. The earliest extant example cited in modern scholarship is an official Guazhou document from 1072, followed by a Liangzhou stele—an inscribed upright stone—from 1094. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell; an inscription from 1502 is recorded.

Why does 𘪡 show as a blank box?

A blank box usually means the selected font lacks Tangut coverage.

Choose a font that includes Tangut. Fonts may draw the strokes differently while still representing the same character.

Specialist: a standalone component points to Tangut character analysis, dictionary indexing, or Unicode work.

It has no fixed meaning on its own; read it as part of a full Tangut character.

1

Why does 𘪡 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
