What ☜ means
A manicule is a hand mark that guides the reader’s eye. In medieval and early modern books, readers drew these hands in the margins to mark noteworthy passages or clarify a page’s structure. Printers later brought the same attention cue into typography.

Questions people ask
1Why does ☜ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
