yi syllable dap

Yi Syllable Dap

267/1165

ꄊ represents the Liangshan Yi syllable written dap in the Latin spelling system; its final p marks a low-falling pitch, not a final consonant. By itself it supplies a syllable, not a word translation; surrounding Yi text gives the word’s meaning. The standardized Liangshan script grew from older regional Yi writing.

What ꄊ means

It represents the syllable dap, not a complete word translation.

In Liangshan Yi’s Latin-letter spelling, dap names this syllable. Its final p is a tone mark for a low pitch that falls, not a pronounced p at the end. The spelling identifies the syllable and tone; the surrounding Yi word supplies the translation.

Some scholars identify inscriptions from the Western Han (206 BC–AD 9) as early Yi writing, but that identification is unsettled. A bronze bell with Yi and Chinese inscriptions is dated to 1485; many manuscripts are undated. Those dates concern Yi writing broadly, not this particular sign.

Why was the Liangshan Yi script standardized?

To support literacy in the Liangshan Yi dialect.

Older Yi writing varied by region and appeared in religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts, often handled by bimo—Yi ritual specialists. The modern standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It was used for official documents, newspapers, literature, and new editions of ritual and epic texts.

The Unicode script follows the Liangshan standard, not every Yi dialect. Other regional Yi writing traditions, including those in Yunnan and Guizhou, have their own forms; this character should not be treated as universal Yi writing.

Neutral inside Liangshan Yi writing; outside that context, it reads as script text rather than a general-purpose reaction.

Avoid using it as decorative “Asian” text; ꄊ belongs to a real Yi writing system.

Questions people ask

2

Is ꄊ an emoji?

No. It is ordinary Yi text; its shape comes from a font rather than a vendor-specific emoji design.

Why does ꄊ show as a box?

That usually means the active font or text renderer lacks a glyph for it. A font with Yi Syllables coverage can display the character; its encoded value stays the same.
