yi syllable da

Yi Syllable Da

266/1165

In Nuosu Yi, ꄉ can mean “put,” mark “from/since,” or follow a verb to mark a resulting or completed state; the sentence decides. It is a written syllable, so a lone ꄉ usually cannot be translated safely. The standardized Liangshan form belongs to a writing tradition with older, regionally varied forms.

What ꄉ means

Its meaning depends on the Nuosu sentence around it. As a verb, ꄉ can mean “put”; as a particle, it can mean “from” or “since”; after a verb, it can mark an established or completed state. The syllable label da names its reading, not an English translation.

A Nuosu origin story credits the script to Aki, a legendary hero. Traditional Yi writing included religious, magical, medical, and family-history records. The earliest surviving Yi inscription cited is dated 1485 and appears on a bronze bell. Modern Liangshan Yi writing was standardized in 1974 and formally adopted in 1980 to support literacy and fit the dialect.

Someone sent me ꄉ—what does it mean?

It is a Yi syllable; the message context supplies its reading. If it arrives alone, the sentence around it is missing, so there is no safe single English translation.

This is the standardized Liangshan form used in Nuosu Yi. Older Yi writing, including forms called Classical Yi, belongs to the wider history of the script, but its character set and glyph shapes are not interchangeable with the modern Liangshan standard.

How can I type ꄉ?

Try a Nuosu phonetic input method. Enter the unmarked syllable da and select ꄉ. Some Yi character maps also let you search by a Yi radical (a stroke pattern used to group characters) and stroke count. If the glyph shows as a square, your selected font lacks Yi coverage; choose one that supports Liangshan Yi.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꄉ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
