yi syllable pox

Yi Syllable Pox

ꁇ is a syllable in the Yi script; “pox” is its romanized label, not an English translation. Older regional Yi writing served bimo, Yi ritual specialists, in religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts. The Liangshan standard later shaped one regional tradition into a phonetic syllabary.

What ꁇ means

Yi writing developed from regional forms into a standard syllabary.

Traditional Yi writing differed by region. Bimo—Yi ritual specialists—used it for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. The earliest securely dated surviving example is an inscription on the Chenghua Bell, from the 15th century; earlier attributions remain disputed.

The Liangshan standard drew on older Northern Yi forms. Devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, it made a phonetic syllabary from that regional tradition: each sign writes a syllable. Yi writing is its own tradition, though regional forms sometimes borrowed Chinese signs.
