yi syllable ssa

Yi Syllable Ssa

ꌳ writes the Yi syllable romanized “ssa”; it is not a standalone word with an English translation. In the Liangshan romanization, the unmarked ending signals a steady middle pitch. Its meaning comes from the surrounding Yi text, and this standardized writing is for Liangshan Yi, one regional variety. The standard grew from older, regionally varied Yi writing.

What ꌳ means

ꌳ writes the Yi syllable romanized “ssa”; it is not a standalone word. In the Liangshan romanization, an unmarked syllable ending signals a level middle tone; final t, x, and p mark other tones. “Ssa” identifies a syllable and its tone, not an English translation: its meaning comes from the surrounding Yi word or sentence.

The earliest securely dated example is a 1485 inscription on a bronze bell; older stone and pottery examples have also been proposed but are less securely dated. The standardized Liangshan syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. Those dates mark a surviving example and a later standard, not the creation of this exact form.

Why was Yi writing made?

It carried ritual knowledge before standardization broadened its use. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, transmitted local writing in texts about religion, healing, family history, and astrology. Yi writing also preserves scripture, legend, and history. Regional traditions differed in glyphs, readings, and writing direction.

The standardized script supports literacy, textbooks, newspapers, official documents, and practical material about rural work and arithmetic. Its dictionary-sorting components, called radicals, were modeled on those in Han Chinese dictionaries. That borrowing concerns how entries are sorted; it does not mean the Yi syllable signs descend from Han characters.

How do I type ꌳ?

Use a Yi input method and enter the syllable’s phonemes. On Windows, add the Yi input method, type with Latin-letter keys, then select ꌳ from the suggestions. Enter or Space accepts the first suggestion.

If ꌳ appears as a square, the active font likely lacks Yi characters. Yi syllables do not change shape to join their neighbors.

Neutral within Yi writing; a lone syllable is hard to interpret without the surrounding words.

A single Yi syllable has no standalone English translation; read it in its word or sentence.
