What 𑁇 means
It marks a boundary in Brahmi writing, not a word. A single stroke closes a clause or another text unit. In verse, placement can mark a line ending or a quarter of a verse; its paired double danda marks a larger verse or section boundary.
How old is Brahmi danda?
The Brahmi punctuation tradition is attested by the third century BCE. Its earliest secure inscriptional record includes the edicts of Ashoka, a ruler whose orders were carved on stone. Early punctuation was sparse and inconsistent: strokes separated clauses, verse quarters, whole verses, and sometimes documents. This dates the tradition, not necessarily the exact shape 𑁇.
Later inscriptions and manuscripts regularized the single and double marks. Brahmi's descendant scripts carried the punctuation family into forms such as the Devanagari danda. Kharoshthi, another ancient South Asian script, had an analogous pair through a neighboring tradition. In Devanagari prose, Western punctuation often replaces the traditional danda; traditional verse still uses it.
Formal and historical; outside Brahmi transcription, it reads as specialist punctuation rather than casual decoration.
For Devanagari text, use the Devanagari danda; this glyph is the Brahmi form.
