Rwanda flag emoji 🇷🇼 and what it means

The Rwanda flag emoji shows three horizontal bands: a wide sky-blue band across the top half, then a yellow band and a green one, with a golden sun of 24 rays in the upper corner on the fly side. The official reading is blue for happiness and peace, yellow for economic development and green for the hope of prosperity; the sun stands for enlightenment, the light of unity and openness driving out ignorance. To spell the flag out in colours, people write or hearts ; the light blue heart is closer to the flag's sky blue than , and is a plain-text sun that works anywhere.

This flag is young. It was adopted in October 2001, together with a new emblem and, soon after, a new national anthem, Rwanda Nziza, "Beautiful Rwanda". The old flag people look for as "Rwanda flag old" was a vertical tricolour of red, yellow and green with a large black R in the middle, the letter added so that it would not be identical to the flag of Guinea. It was replaced after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, to give the country symbols of peace and of a shared future.

Rwanda's constitution names four national symbols: the flag, the motto, the seal and the anthem. The motto is Ubumwe, Umurimo, Gukunda Igihugu, "Unity, Work, Patriotism". The seal, the national emblem, is a green ring tied in a knot around the sun, a woven agaseke basket , a sorghum stalk and a coffee branch , a cogwheel for industry and two traditional shields , with ribbons carrying the country's name, Repubulika y’u Rwanda, and the motto.

Behind the scenes is not a picture but two regional indicator letters, and , spelling the country code RW. Phones and Macs draw the pair as the flag; Windows has no flag pictures in its emoji font and shows the letters RW instead, though a friend on a phone still sees the flag.

Rwanda emoji for gorillas, volcanoes, lakes and wildlife

If one emoji stands for Rwanda abroad, it is the gorilla . Mountain gorillas live in only two places: the Virunga volcanoes, which Rwanda shares with Uganda and DR Congo, and Uganda's Bwindi forest. On the Rwandan side they live in Volcanoes National Park, where small groups of visitors climb through farmland, bamboo and nettles to spend an hour with one gorilla family. The American primatologist Dian Fossey studied them from her Karisoke research camp, founded there in 1967; her book Gorillas in the Mist and the film made from it made the gorillas famous, and she is buried beside the gorillas she protected. Every year the Kwita Izina ceremony gives names to the baby gorillas born in the park: .

The Virunga volcanoes also give Rwanda its highest point, Mount Karisimbi, 4,507 metres. Golden monkeys live in the park's bamboo, and Nyungwe Forest in the south-west, an old mountain rainforest with a canopy walkway high in the trees , is home to chimpanzees and big troops of colobus monkeys and to hundreds of species of birds .

In the east, Akagera National Park is savannah, lakes and papyrus swamps along the border with Tanzania. Since lions were brought back in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, it has all of the Big Five again, with leopards , elephants and buffalo , plus giraffes , zebras , hippos and crocodiles .

Everywhere between, Rwanda is hills : it is called the land of a thousand hills, le pays des mille collines in French, and mornings start with mist lying in the valleys . On the western border lies Lake Kivu , one of Africa's Great Lakes, with beaches at Rubavu (Gisenyi), Karongi and Rusizi and sunsets over the hills of Congo . In the evening fishermen paddle out in wooden boats , singing to keep the stroke, to catch isambaza, small sardine-like fish that are fried and eaten whole.

Coffee, tea and Rwandan food emoji

Is Rwanda known for coffee? Yes : Arabica, much of it the Bourbon variety, grown by small farmers on the high hills, processed at hundreds of washing stations and sold to speciality roasters around the world. Tea is the other great crop, from estates on the hills and on the edge of Nyungwe; at home it is drunk as icyayi, often boiled with milk and spiced with ginger .

On the plate are cooking bananas , beans , potatoes from the volcanic soils of the north, sweet potatoes , maize and isombe, cassava leaves pounded and stewed, often with peanut paste . Ubugali, a stiff porridge of cassava or maize flour, is eaten with stews . For an evening out the classic is goat brochettes with chips , livened up with akabanga, a fierce chilli oil sold in tiny yellow bottles . Avocados , pineapples and mangoes fill the markets.

Milk has a place of honour: ikivuguto, thick fermented milk, is sold in Kigali's milk bars. Beer means bottled lagers such as Primus and Mützig, or the home brews: urwagwa, banana beer, and ikigage, sorghum beer, which is where fits.

Inyambo cattle, Intore dance, crafts and Kigali

Cows sit at the heart of Rwandan culture. The Inyambo, long-horned cattle once bred for the royal court, were trained to walk in procession and praised in poetry; they can still be seen at the King's Palace Museum in Nyanza, beside a rebuilt royal palace under a great thatched roof . A cow is the most honoured of gifts, and since 2006 the government's Girinka programme, "may you have a cow", has given a cow to poor families.

The Intore dance, "the chosen ones", was once performed by the king's warriors: men with spears and shields, long pale headdresses and bells on their ankles leap and stamp to the drums , while the women's dances are slow and graceful, arms raised like the horns of the Inyambo . Two crafts are everywhere: agaseke, the tall woven basket with a pointed lid , a traditional gift and part of the national emblem, and imigongo , bold black, white and red geometric panels moulded from cow dung, from the east of the country.

Kigali is famous for being clean. On the last Saturday morning of every month, Umuganda brings people out for community work, sweeping streets and planting trees , and plastic bags have been banned since 2008 . At night the dome of the Kigali Convention Centre glows in changing colours over the city lights . Motorbike taxis are the quick way across the city's hills, the rider in a numbered vest with a helmet for the passenger, and RwandAir , the national airline, flies from Kigali across Africa and beyond.

Holidays, remembrance and sport

Rwanda became independent on 1 July 1962, and 4 July is Liberation Day, Kwibohora, which remembers the day in 1994 when the Rwandan Patriotic Front took Kigali; both are days for . Heroes' Day falls on 1 February, and Umuganura, the harvest festival on the first Friday of August, gives thanks for the first sorghum and the rest of the harvest . Most Rwandans are Christian, many of them Catholic , with a Muslim minority ; Kibeho in the south is a place of pilgrimage, where apparitions of the Virgin Mary reported in the 1980s were recognised by the Church in 2001.

From 7 April each year Rwanda observes Kwibuka, "remember", the commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi, in which an estimated 800,000 to more than a million people were murdered in about a hundred days in 1994. The Flame of Remembrance is lit, people lay flowers at memorials such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, and online they post or with the word Kwibuka. It is a time of mourning, so party emoji do not belong in those messages.

Football is the most popular sport; the national team, Amavubi, "the Wasps" , played its first Africa Cup of Nations in 2004. Cycling is a national passion: the Tour du Rwanda draws crowds along every road, and in 2025 Kigali hosted the UCI Road World Championships, the first ever held in Africa. Basketball has grown fast too, and the first season of the Basketball Africa League was played in Kigali in 2021. Abroad, the words Visit Rwanda appeared on Arsenal's sleeve through June 2026 and on PSG's men's first-team sleeve at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Rwanda languages, letters and currency

Kinyarwanda is the language of nearly every Rwandan; CLDR 49 places the number of Kinyarwanda speakers in Rwanda at about 10 million; Rwanda's 2026 population is projected at about 14.4 million. It is written in plain Latin letters without accents: its tones and long vowels are not marked in everyday spelling, so you need no special characters, only the apostrophe of contracted forms such as Repubulika y’u Rwanda, the Republic of Rwanda. The country is u Rwanda, one Rwandan is Umunyarwanda and the people Abanyarwanda; hello is Muraho, thank you Murakoze and welcome Murakaza neza. Kinyarwanda is very close to Kirundi, the language of Burundi , and the Kinyarwanda collection has its whole alphabet.

English, French and Swahili are official languages too. English, with about 2 million speakers in CLDR's estimate, replaced French as the language of schooling in 2008, and Rwanda joined the Commonwealth in 2009; French, with about 800,000, lives on in older papers and in names like the Hôtel des Mille Collines. French needs à â ç é è ê ë î ï ô œ ù û and their capitals, and its quotation marks « ». On Windows hold Alt and type on the number pad: 0233 é, 0232 è, 0234 ê, 0224 à, 0231 ç, 0156 œ. On a Mac, Option + E then a letter gives é, Option + ` then a letter gives è or à, Option + I gives a circumflex, Option + C gives ç and Option + Q gives œ. On a phone, press and hold the plain letter. The English, French and Swahili collections cover those languages in full.

The currency is the Rwandan franc, code RWF. It has no Unicode sign of its own; prices are written with RWF or Frw, as in 5,000 Frw. Kigali is the capital and by far the largest city.
