combining macron right half below

Combining Macron Right Half Below

13/16

︬ closes a macron—a straight bar mark—beneath a run of letters; alone, it is incomplete. A two-letter span pairs it with the matching left half, while longer spans add a joining middle mark. Its documented setting is Caucasian Albanian manuscript numerals; its encoded role is a technical text component.

Text symbol

What ︬ means

It closes a straight bar mark below multiple letters. A macron is a straight horizontal bar. ︬ is a combining fragment: its reading depends on the letters and marks around it.

Its oldest documented setting is seventh-century CE Caucasian Albanian palimpsests—manuscripts reused after earlier writing was scraped away—at St Catherine’s Monastery. Caucasian Albanian was an old language of the Caucasus. In that script, a line above or below letters could mark them as numerals; a continuous line crossed longer letter runs. The exact right-half-below component enters the Unicode proposal trail in 2011–2012 as a building piece for a two-letter span.

The wider half-mark set also represents continuous macrons above letter runs in Coptic, a language used in Egypt’s Christian tradition. That parallel describes an encoding pattern; it does not make ︬ itself a Coptic sign.

How do I place it correctly?

Pair it with a left half and the marked letters. To use ︬ with letters, place the left-half-below mark after the first letter and ︬ after the second: a︫b︬. For three or more letters, put the conjoining-below mark between the middle letters: a︫b︭c︬.

For one letter, use the single-letter mark ̱. Do not substitute the above right-half mark ︥; it closes a separate above-macron pattern.

Why does ︬ look wrong by itself?

Alone, it is an unfinished combining mark. If someone sends only ︬, read it as a technical fragment, not a complete sign. Even in a full sequence, the font or text-shaping system can fail to position it with the letters.

Technical and scholarly; it points to manuscript transcription or text-encoding work.

Alone, it is unfinished; unsupported fonts may also display it poorly.

Questions people ask

2

Why does ︬ look blank or misplaced?

It can. The mark needs a base letter, font coverage, and shaping support. A dotted circle in a specimen is a display aid for an isolated mark, not part of the text.

Can ︬ serve as a one-letter underline?

No. Use the single-letter mark ̱ for one letter; ︬ closes a multi-letter span.
